I created these images using a program I wrote to graph sections of the mandelbrot and julia sets, combinations of them and various other fractal algorithms.
There are many programs you can download to do similar things, I wrote my own to learn a bit more about the underlying maths and gain greater control over the imaging process.
Finding a section to capture as an image is very similar to photography on a basic level, you search for an eye-pleasing composition, lines and patterns etc, but instead of looking in the physical world you are moving through an abstract mathematical world. Many of the patterns and the level of detail occurring is evocative of scenes from the natural world, such as trees, plants, shells, blood vessels, landscapes, galaxies etc.
